XANTHOS ANCIENT CITY
Xanthos Ancient City
The ancient capital city of the Lycian Federation is just east of Fethiye. According to Greek mythology, Sarpedon from Crete founded the city. It is no wonder why it is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List for this ancient city is bursting with well-preserved examples of Lycian traditions mingled with the Hellenic influences.
The other cities of the Xanthos Valley are either citadels or cities that expanded from the flourishing of Xanthos. Climb to the top of the Roman theatre to see the symbols of Xanthos, the Harpy Tomb and Lycian Sarcophagus. If you are standing at a higher ground within the Xanthos valley, you will be able to see the Xanthos River flowing close to the west side along with the poignant Taurus Mountains. By the river, there is an immensely fertile area that is known for growing cotton, tomatoes and other crops perhaps a sign of the city could sustain itself by the richness that thrives in this valley.
Also around the area, you can visit a Byzantine church, a fortress at the top of the Acropolis – you will find no shortage of relics here at this old capital. The area of Xanthos is home to many different archaeological sites such as Pinara Ancient City, Letoon Ancient City and Araxa Ancient City.
