PINARA ANCIENT CITY
Pinara Ancient City
There is no shortage of sights to visit in the surrounding area of Fethiye. A grand example of such is Pinara. Once it was one of the three major cities in the Xanthos valley area. There is a theory that is was founded as an extension of the overpopulated city of Xanthos. It was one of the main six cities of Lycia. Its importance is also because a sanctuary was built devoted to the goddess Aphrodite. Around Pinara you will find the remains of several ancient temples, as well as more than nine hundred rock tombs and monolithic house tombs. Of which one of these is a “royal tomb”, with an upper and a lower acropolis, a theatre, an odeon, an agora and a church.
It’s easy to feel engulfed by the ruins and take note about how Pinara was one of the large cities in Lycia. Still untouched with its ancient olive trees, wildflowers, fresh breeze and the mountain backdrop all put together a picturesque view over the Xanthos valley. It isn’t crowded with too many other visitors which will give you a more private enjoyment of this mystical place. But while in the Xanthos valley area others are interested in visiting the famed Xanthos Ancient City, Letoon Ancient City and Cadianda.
