Soura Ancient City

This ancient city out from Kekova was once the home of the ancient Apollo oracle, Sura Ancient City is quite unspoilt and hardly visited. It is also not too far from Demre. To be a little clearer, this city was never truly a city but more of a residential area for the priests there and stands today as a rock-cut terrace. It is said to have been very popular in the ancient world as it is where pilgrims would come to visit the priests who dwelled there at the time. These pilgrims would come and stay in one of the 12 chamber keeps. These pilgrims would then gift roasted meat to the priests who would then throw the meat into a well. The fish would then be attracted by the food and the priests would read the movements and make their fish predictions. It is estimated that around the 4th Century A.D that these oracle rituals were carried out here. Later when these rituals were under suppression, two Byzantine churches were built one behind the temple and the other in the acropolis.
