There is a place near Canakkale which is really worth the attention and visiting. This is Kaz Mountain, one which many refer to as magical, and which is among the Turkish locals known as Kaz Dagi. Kaz Dagi means the Goose Mountain.

There are many stories from the past related specifically to this mountain. Some say that the people here were cutting trees and making Navy ships for Mehmet the Conqueror. During the 15th century, the woods of Kaz Mountain had a significant practitioner role in the moments of Istanbul conquest.

This magical place has an altitude of 1,774 m and is located at about 20 km from Canakkale Province, just above the Gulf of Edremit. Its name was Mount Ida during Greece’s rule and was known as The House of the Goods from Homer’s stories because it was thought that Greek Gods lived here. According to tradition, on Kaz mountain, Greek goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite competed in beauty. Due to Priam’s participation and Aphrodite's victory, the first direct reason for the Trojan War appeared here.

Kaz Dagi is partly the protected National Park but partly is unprotected territory. The beauty of nature in every part is equal and those who want to investigate can do that without any restrictions. However, some parts of the mountain are very difficult to reach and therefore is necessary to have special equipment for hiking if you want to fully conquer this natural beauty. The mountain has mostly olive trees and pine, while it is possible to see the locals and a few small villages which survived.
