Aspendos Theatre

The surrounding area of Antalya boasts so many sites to visit and one worth visiting is the theatre at Aspendos. Or even if you are already at Aspendos Ancient City do make sure to hike up to the theatre, sit upon the ruins of the old steps and contemplate the grandeur it once was. The Aspendos Theatre is one of the most well-preserved examples of eastern Roman theatre construction in the world. This Hellenistic influenced theatre was built around 161-169 AD and considering how long its been standing, it seems to be almost intact.

It was the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius that requested that this epic structure be built. The construction of this theatre seems to have not been affected by time as this theatre is still used for performances to this day. Outdoor concerts and summer festivals such as the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival take place at this very formidable structure.

Should you have managed to take in the architectural grandeur of Aspendos, explored the ruins of the ancient city you might want to make your way to other bewildering ancient cities of Lycia during your travels in Turkey. Travellers from this point would visit Side Ancient City, Selge Ancient City and Selekueia Ancient City.
