ARYKANDA ANCIENT CITY
In the area of the Antalya, there are many ancient cities to visit but none is as unique as Arykanda. One of the oldest Lycian sites, this ancient Lycian city was built upon five large terraces ascending a mountain slope. A great location as the city overlooks the picturesque valley. Entirely picture-worthy there is a distinct air of mystique about Arykanda. Many different Gods and Goddesses are known to have been worshipped here at one point, such as Apollo, Area, Artemis, Athena, Hera, Hellos, Mithras, Hercules, Aphrodite and Nemesis. The city survived through Byzantine times until the ninth century when the settlement then moved to a new site south of the modern road.
Take your time to explore this city, some of the highlight things to see is the largest bath complex in Lycia, it’s second-century amphitheatre, agoras, odeons, a Hellenistic period stadium just above the theatre, the bouleuterion and the necropolises. There are two different tomb areas, one at the entrance to the site, which are more richly, ornamented monuments while the ones to the east are barrel-vaulted tombs.
For some travellers that are already visiting the region, they make their way towards Ariassos Ancient City, Perge Ancient City and Pednelissos Ancient City to explore.
