Pednelissos Ancient City

About 75 kilometres out of Antalya lies the ancient city of Pednelissos on the lower slopes of the Taurus Mountains. This Hellenistic city is still under archaeological discovery. It is, however, open for you to conduct your own exploration. There are so many ruins to unravel throughout the city that one could easily spend a day here imagining how the city must have been. Walk among the ruins of the city walls, fortress, main squares and churches. The city’s fortifications were built in the first century BC while the agora of the town built around the second century BC. Just outside of the fortifications there is a necropolis and a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo.

One of the main structures of this ancient city is the Hellenistic styled three-storey market building. During the Roman times, the first floor was different shop stalls, the second floor served as storage for the merchandise and the third floor the agora was built. Adjacent to the building there are remains of the staircase. A little further back are ruins of two churches.

From here many history buffs or those intrigued by Ancient Lycia go to Side Ancient City, Selge Ancient City and Selekuei Ancient City.
