Translated from the Turkish, Saklikent means the Hidden City. The Saklikent Gorge is 20 kilometres long and is at 40 minutes drive from Fethiye. Thanks to the incredible length of the canyon, it is in second place for its size in Europe, just behind the Samaria Gorge, and in Turkey is in the first place if we compare both length and depth. This Gorge was declared a National Part in 1996 and is therefore protected by the state. Under the protection of the Government are also 1,643 hectares which belong to this part. Throughout the year, visitors can get to the entrance of the Gorge, but one is allowed to enter inside only during the summer, after payment of a small fee.
After arriving to Saklikent Gorge, one can expect a rough, but still a pleasant walk in a length of 4 kilometers. Furthermore, this in not a big problem for the tourists because the cold water in the Gorge is a real refreshment on hot days. During the walk you will enjoy the view of the surrounding walls, that nature has shaped in its own way. Saklikent Gorge is near the Taurus Mountains, which during the winter makes these areas almost impassable, and the water from the Gorge slowly travel to Xanthos River. The rich flora in the entire length impresses tourists who come from all over the world.
