HOYRAN WEDRE

Hoyran Wedre
Hoyran Wedre

Hoyran Wedre means “land of goddess” and once you have spent some time wandering through this ancient Lycian settlement, you will easily understand why. This serene village is located in the quiet village of Hoyran, sitting on the foot of the Taurus Mountains just out of Antalya. Also perched at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level this village has an advantageous viewpoint that will take your breath away. Hoyran Wedre overlooks the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, the horizon stretching outwards to Kekova Island and the Chelidonian cape. The entire area is dotted with Lycian tombs, some of them carved directly into the rock faces and others just lying on the overgrown grass. You might want to weave between these tombs and keep an eye out for a ‘secret’ passage that will lead you to a splendorous lookout point over the coastline of Simena, Kekova and the Sunken City. Towards the end of the village, there is a walled path, it leads up the small cliff passing tombs to an open area. Just behind these are Lycian pillar rock tombs, one adorned with a partridge, cockerel and griffon while the other has a bas-relief of the family paying their respects to the seated figure. There is also an especially delightful picnic terrace area through the gap between rocks. If you are lucky you might be able to get some space to camp here for a night.

From this point, many venture back to continue their trekking experience down the Lycian Way or make Kekova and Finike their next destinations.
