ALARA CASTLE
Alara Castle
While in Antalya make a detour to the southern part of the province to visit this historic castle in Alanya. Perched atop a colossal rock at the bank of the Alara River sits Alara Castle. Well protected at its superior height from invaders, it was built during the Byzantine Empire as a safeguarded area. The castle incorporates a citadel inside the outer walls while the inside has rock tunnels and steep stairways. In the heart of the citadel’s ruins is a palace, accommodation area for the garrison, a mosque and a bath. To get up to the castle is an adventure on its own, the only way up is through a steep tunnel that is carved out of the rock.
The tunnel isn’t very well lit so we would advise on bringing a torch to avoid any unfortunate stumbles. But keep reminding yourself that once you reach the top of the castle you will be compensated with a magnificent view. Towering above the land looking down the steep ledge of the walls you will feel an adrenaline rush. Recover from your strenuous hike up before you make the journey back down. Once back to the base you might reward yourself with a cooling dip at either Cleopatra’s Beach, Alanya, Dalmatas Beach or at Alara Waterfall.
