KARAIN CAVE
Should you be looking for a place that has been inhabited for over 25,000 years, there is one day trip worth taking out from Antalya. If you are looking to visit other ancient sites in the area this is also a perfect side-trip destination. The cave lies high up on a steep mountainside, it’s entrance showing the on-going archaeologist excavation. The artefacts found at Karain are exhibited at the Antalya Museum. Past the entrance, there are several spacious chambers that you can go explore the unusually shaped walls and ceilings, their warped shadows illuminated by high-powered electric lights. Let your imagination flow as you try to picture how past civilizations inhabited this area over the 1000s of centuries. High on one pillar, someone has carved a face that seems to resemble a tribute to Ataturk. After exploring the rooms be sure to visit the museum. The Museum of Anatolian Civilisations displays an extensive collection of artefacts from the Palaeolithic Age. Admire the ancient flint blades, arrowheads, scrapers and even the human bones that belong to Homo Sapiens and to Homo Neanderthalensis.
For other fascinating caves in the Turkish region make your way to visit Altinbesik Cave, Dim Cave and Cimenici Cave.
